| 内容記述 | Speaking anxiety can negatively affect students in various ways, and teachers need to consider methods for counteracting these inhibitive effects. Incorporating background music into the language classroom is one possible technique for easing students’ fear of speaking. This pilot study sought to determine if certain types of music relieve anxiety more than others. Students attending a national university in northern Japan listened to different types of classroom music during a compulsory 15-week English speaking and listening course. Three broad types of music were selected: music with Japanese lyrics, music with English lyrics, and instrumental music. Students listened to the music while practicing English conversations with a partner or group. In week 15, a questionnaire survey was administered to investigate the music’s effectiveness for alleviating speaking anxiety. The survey consisted of 14 Likert statements using a 5-point scale. Results showed students felt less anxious while listening to music in the speaking and listening course. Based on the results of this study, background music appears to alleviate students’ anxiety with the results suggesting some types of music reduce anxiety more than others. | |||||||
