Presently, three main focus areas of language education in Canada are: official-language education, indigenous language education, and new immigrant language education. While official-language education and new immigrant education receive significant public (governmental) and social support, indigenous language education remains on the periphery, relying mainly on grassroots and community efforts for survival. This paper aims to provide a brief introduction to each of these areas, as well as a brief sketch of the social and historical contexts through which they have evolved.
