| 内容記述 | Oral reading is an important and effective second-language learning technic. Especially, it can be a successful way for Japanese students to improve their oral English skills, because they usually have few chances to conduct natural conversations in English. However, so far, there have not been enough studies investigating whether Japanese secondary school students do enough oral reading when studying English. It is also not clear whether teachers utilize oral reading practice in secondary schools in Japan. This study investigated these issues, and also compared the situation of Japanese students learning English with that of Chinese students learning English. It was found that Japanese students do not actively do oral reading practice as much as Chinese students do. Japanese students hardly practice oral reading in front of people or when alone. This study also found that Japanese teachers do not emphasize the importance of oral reading as much as Chinese teachers do. Although there are a number of Japanese teachers who instruct students to do oral reading practice, their instructions are not really understood or followed by the students. Another phenomenon is found in that, in public, Japanese students feel much more embarrassed to do oral reading than Chinese students, who think it is natural to do so. Thus, when encouraging Japanese students to do oral reading practice, it is necessary to improve their understanding on the functions of the practice, and to help them to overcome the embarrassment of doing the practice in front of people. | |||||||||||
