A lot of structures to prevent the falls have been constructed in the mountain and along the coast. However, the design concent of these structures is due to the experiential engineering taking different situation to construct each structure into account. In this paper, we analyzed theoretically the impulsive acceleration and the penetration of a model weight into a sand cushion. reffering to the test conducted by Yoshida, which was a model modified the rock falls on a flat sand layer. The relationships between the impulsive acceleration and the falling height, the impulsive acceleration and the ratio of falling height to penetration into the sand, the impulsive time and the impact force were studied respectively. They were compared with the test results measured by Yoshida. Authors propose the four element model with virtual mass, and it leads to the results which comparatively is in good agreement with those of the model experiment.
