Firstly, the experiments on chemical coagulation were carried out by means of jar tests using both ferric chloride and aluminum sulfate as coagulants. The effects of organic content in terms of COD and BOD, coagulant dosage and pH on the removal of COD and BOD were presented and the mechanism of chemical coagulation of the wastewater was discussed. In addition, critical size of organic impurities to be possible of removal was estimated to be around 10⁻⁵cm, from the measured particle-size distributions of the tested and clarified waters. Secondly, the experiments on the activated sludge process employing batch tests were conducted using the sludge acclimated to the wastewaters being tested which were pretreated with chemical coagulation. The removability and the reduction rate of organic impurities were examined and the effects of organic loading and temperature on the rate constant of the reduction during a brief aeration period of 30~60 min were investigated and formulated.
