But, the production and the usage were banned in 1972 because of its biological toxicity. In 2004, Japanese government decided to eliminate the total preserved PCBs by chemical processing. One of the facilities was built and began working in Muroran in 2008. In 2005, we began to monitor the level of PCBs and dioxins in the mussel captured at the shore reef in Muroran and neighboring sea, which was selected as one of the monitor living organisms of dioxins in 2003 by Japanese Ministry of the Environment. Our bio-monitoring revealed that the mussel did not contain dioxins and PCBs in the high level and that a large amount of PCBs was precipitated in the bottom mud of the Muroran bay. Based on the results we discussed main sources of the PCBs and dioxins and evaluated the
