Any compound shows one or two peak(s) at magnetic transition temperature(s) in the temperature dependence of the specific heat. The values of the specific heat below the temperature of 10 K for α-Gd2S3 are considerably larger than those for other α-R2S3 and comparable to those for other cold storage materials. Application of magnetic field perpendicular to the b-axis of α-Dy2S3 single crystal shifts the antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN1 toward higher temperature and decreases magnetic entropy. In this case, adiabatic demagnetization after isothermal magnetization at 12 K with a magnetic field of 5 T yields a magnetic refrigeration effect of  Tad =  5.8
